Results and Activities

Result 1- Improved the sustainability and resource efficiency of the leather sector in Bangladesh throughout the whole value chain.

The action will bring as first result improvements in the sustainability and resource efficiency throughout the whole value chain of the leather related products in Bangladesh, acting and reducing the impacts on the environment, economy and society.

The activities proposed to  achieve this result are the following:

  • Implementation of the Best SCP Practices in the SMEs of the Bangladeshi Leather Sector to foster sustainability.
  • Implementation of Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) in the SMEs of the Leather Sector in Bangladesh.
  • Creation of a panel of experts in SCP practices and certification models to assure the continuation after the finalization of the action.

The achievement of this result will benefit the following Target Groups and Final Beneficiaries:

  • The SMEs of the Bangladeshi Leather Sector will improve their environmental, economic and social performance by implementing Best SCP practices and Environmental Management Systems.
  • The workers of the leather sector SMEs will improve their working conditions by ameliorating the health and safety in their workplace.
  • The residents of the slums situated in the industrial areas will improve their live conditions.
  • The Citizens of Bangladesh will benefit from reduced environmental impact, economic savings in the Leathergoods products, and social benefits such as new employment generation and improved health and safety conditions.
  • The Leather Industrial Associations will improve their knowledge in sustainability practices and Environmental Management Systems.

Result 2- Promoted green commercialization and consumption through the implementation of eco-labelling schemes in the leather footwear sector.

The second foreseen result is the implementation of Eco-labelling Schemes in 20 Bangladeshi leather footwear SMEs and the promotion of eco-labelled footwear consumption and commercialization.

For achieving this second result of the action, the following activities will be carried out:

  • Identification of consumers’ constraints and limitations to buy sustainable products.
  • Design and Development of Eco-labelling Schemes for footwear.
  • Creation of market demand of eco-labelled leather footwear among consumers and intermediate agents.

The achievement of this result will benefit the following Target Groups and Final Beneficiaries:

  • The implementation of Eco-labelling schemes in the Bangladeshi leather footwear sector SMEs provides companies with economic, resource and energy savings. Moreover, the companies will enhance the visibility, exportability and market penetration of their products to national and international markets, improving their competitiveness.
  • Consumers will improve their capacity of doing informed choices of sustainable and eco-efficient footwear products by increasing the transparency of their sustainable and environmental attributes and promoting them as green products through accurate and understandable information on their sustainability performance.
  • The leather industrial associations will improve their knowledge on the consumers’ point of view regarding sustainability issues and Eco-labelling.
  • Retailers and other commerce agents will count with eco-labelled products, thus facilitating the market expansion to countries where environmentally-friendly products are required.

Result 3- Increased the awareness and commitment of governmental institutions in SCP practices and engagement of financing bodies.

The aim of this result is to make relevant Bangladeshi policy-makers and financial institutions aware of the importance of implementing SCP measures and the financial benefits that the SCP adoption can bring to the leather sector industries (particularly to the SMEs).

The activities that will be carried out in order to achieve this result are:

  • Involvement and commitment of governmental institutions to support SCP Practices at Policy level.
  • Facilitation of the access to “Green financing” for SMEs by engaging financial institutions for inclusion of sustainability aspects in investment assessment and loan provisions.

The achievement of this result will benefit the following Target Groups and Final Beneficiaries:

  • Policy Makers: The implementation of the action will strengthen the institutional structure at policy level for the promotion of SCP practices in the Bangladeshi Leather Sector.
  • Financial Institutions will be more sensitized towards sustainable investment. 
  • The SMEs of the Bangladeshi Leather Sector will have more access to “Green financing” and improved SCP legislation

Result 4- Capacity building and SCP practices disseminated to key stakeholders.

The last foreseen result consists on the capacity building of the key stakeholders and dissemination of the results of the action.

This result will be achieved through three main components:

  • The dissemination of the outcomes of the action through the elaboration and implementation of a Communication and Visibility Plan,
  • The development of dissemination activities for communication and capacity building of the relevant stakeholders.
  • The replication of the action results through networking activities.

The achievement of the action results will benefit the following Target Groups and Final Beneficiaries:

  • Bangladeshi Leather Sector SMEs will benefit from the delivery of the documentation that will enable them to improve the environmental, social and economic performance of their production processes. The guidelines will include a set of best SCP practices to foster the sustainability in the leather sector of Bangladesh, as well as information on how to implement Environmental Management Systems and Eco-labelling schemes. They will gain in knowledge in SCP practices and certification models.
  • Retailers and commerce agents will count with eco-labelled products that will facilitate the market expansion.
  • Consumers will benefit from accurate information on the sustainability from the leather related products.
